Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are the living legends that illuminate our communities and shape the destinies of our future leaders. Among the most revered traditions within the HBCU tapestry is the vibrant spectacle of homecoming season.

It's a time when generations of students and alumni converge, forging bonds, and basking in the glory of their beloved alma maters. This annual celebration typically unfolds in September and October.

HBCU homecomings are a mosaic of events that capture the essence of the rich legacy they represent. The festivities encompass a regal coronation ceremony, spirited parades, rhythmic step shows, reunion like block parties, food filled tailgates, soul-stirring concerts, and so much more.

Elizabeth City State University, nestled in the heart of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, near the enchanting Outer Banks, stands as a shining example of HBCU excellence. Established in 1891 as a teacher's college, ECSU has blossomed into a thriving institution offering a diverse array of majors, from aviation and digital media to business, criminal justice, and sports medicine.

Despite its growth, ECSU has managed to preserve the intimate ambiance that makes it feel like home to all who grace its halls. For many, returning to ECSU during homecoming is like a pilgrimage, a reunion with cherished memories.

The anticipation surrounding ECSU's homecoming is palpable, not only among its Viking family but also within the ranks of the university's athletic directors, chancellors, presidents, and the local business community. ECSU's Athletic Director, James Dubose, encapsulates the sentiment when he remarks, "This is my second homecoming as a part of the Viking family, and regardless of the game's outcome, the atmosphere in Vikingland is always upbeat."

As the years have rolled by, ECSU's homecomings have evolved, but the unwavering love and loyalty of the Viking community have remained constant. Whether it's expressed through D9 Greek organizations showing their love, an unyielding passion for football, or the joy of introducing family and friends to the magic of ECSU's homecoming events, the devotion runs deep.

Now, as the curtain rises on another homecoming season, HBCUs across the nation are gearing up for this joyous occasion. It's a time that shines light on the essence of the culture, an opportunity to etch new chapters into the annals of history, all while reveling in the rich history that HBCUs have already woven.
