In the United States, there are 107 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) scattered across the nation, from Alabama and Mississippi down south to Delaware and Maryland up north. Yet, among this diverse landscape, there's a small HBCU in North Carolina that stands out and draws students from near and far. Meet Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), where Viking Pride runs deep and strong, especially for students like Kristen Bannerman, Jared Bell, and Noel Herron.

ECSU's story begins back in 1891 when it was founded by Hugh Cale, an African American representative in North Carolina. Back then, it was known as Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School, later evolving into Elizabeth City State Teachers College, and then Elizabeth City State College. Finally, in 1969, it earned its current title, Elizabeth City State University.

Today, ECSU boasts a lineup of over 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Jared Bell, an ECSU student, enthusiastically highlights one of the university's top majors – Aviation. He's got a point; ECSU is the sole institution in North Carolina offering this remarkable program. It's no wonder that students of all races are drawn to ECSU, with the chance to soar to new heights.

Kristen Bannerman, a first-generation college student, is among those who found their home at ECSU. Her journey at the university is a testament to the inclusive and supportive environment that welcomes students from all backgrounds. Noel Herron, on the other hand, is forging a promising path as a future social worker, driven by a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Over the years, ECSU has seen various leaders at its helm, from principals to presidents, and now, chancellors. Dr. Karrie G. Dixon currently holds the position of chancellor since 2018.

Kristen, Noel, and Jared articulate what makes them proud HBCU graduates and why they're particularly enchanted with ECSU. As Jared Bell aptly puts it, "students at ECSU are literally elevated." It's a sentiment shared by many, as this remarkable university continues to make its mark in the world of higher education.

In essence, ECSU's uniqueness stems from its rich history, exceptional programs, and the enduring spirit of Viking Pride that unites its student body.
