CATONSVILLE, MD - Black History Month, a celebration that unfolds each February, is a dedicated time to honor and embrace African American history. The inception of this commemorative month dates back to 1926 when Carter G. Woodson, hailed as the father of Black History Month, envisioned the establishment of Negro History Week. The evolution continued, and in 1976, this week expanded into a month-long observance, solidified by President Gerald Ford.

The imperative to integrate Black history into K-12 education has become increasingly evident in contemporary society. Despite the acknowledgment of this necessity, a striking reality persists—Black history remains insufficiently disseminated in schools across America. However, glimmers of hope emerge, exemplified by institutions like St. Mark School in Catonsville, MD, which has embraced the mission of making Black History Month an integral part of its curriculum.

Embarking on the inaugural day of Black History Month, St. Mark School, a Catholic institution nestled just outside Baltimore, ignited the spirit of learning with a captivating laser light show. This innovative presentation unfolded over 40 minutes, seamlessly weaving through the tapestry of Black history, from the present with figures like Vice President Kamala Harris to the luminary past embodied by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The soundtrack accompanying this visual journey catered to diverse tastes, ensuring engagement for everyone in attendance.

Reflecting on this immersive experience, Jay "Coach Jay" Jefferson, the Physical Education teacher for grades 3-8, expressed his appreciation, underscoring a personal journey of seeking knowledge. "My people didn't [educate me on Black history]; I had to do my own research and gain my own knowledge. My aunt helped a lot," shared Coach Jay. This sentiment unveils a longstanding challenge, emphasizing that the gap in teaching Black history isn't a recent phenomenon but rather a persistent historical oversight.

Coach Jay also said, “This was a great presentation for the students here at the school. It allows them to learn something new in a fun and interactive way.”

St. Mark School's proactive approach to education resonates with the growing diversity within its student body. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, the school strives to create an environment where every student feels a sense of belonging, and their history is acknowledged and celebrated. Despite some students' initial unfamiliarity with the showcased figures, the laser show is a transformative educational tool, fostering understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of Black history.
