BALTIMORE - Lexington Market is not your typical market. For years, it has had stalls filled with everything a person could think of. Lexington Market has been a community staple for decades, located in West Baltimore at 112 N Eutaw St, Baltimore, MD 21201. Opened in 1782, it began as a meeting place for people to exchange goods. By 1865, the shed-style market became home to nearly 1,172 stalls, with 350 on the surrounding streets.
Many may ask what type of things you can find in Lexington Market. The market has you covered with raw fish and chicken, collard greens, fried chicken, international foods, donuts, ice cream, clothing stalls, and more. By 1982, the arcade-style market emerged, housing two restaurants and 24 eateries and a space for dancing, music, and other entertainment.
Moving forward to 2022, a new 60,000-square-foot building was constructed and opened, reverting to its original shed-style format. Today, in 2023, Lexington Market celebrates its 1st anniversary in this new building.
In this new era, more eateries than ever can be found. The infamous Faidleys remains in business, known for their lump crab cakes and fresh seafood for over 135 years. The market also hosts places like Krause’s (selling sliced turkey and gravy), Sausage Master (offering hot dogs, sausages, and snowballs), Tharaka Brothers (a black-owned ice cream-making company), and Deddle’s Donuts, selling creative mini donut flavors (from funnel cake to Oreo smash, and apple pie flavor).
Sharlot Owens, the co-owner of Just Elbow, says, “Everyone has these expectations of the old market, and now that we have this different market, sometimes it’s overwhelming.” Just Elbows is one of the new merchants at the new building. She had an idea with her daughter and wasn't sure if Lexington Market would pick them up, but lo and behold, they did.
Lexington Market is becoming more diverse than many have seen in a long time. The people who live and work in the community feel safer, regularly visiting the market and adding this Baltimore destination back to their traditions.
Situated in the heart of West Baltimore, Lexington Market has been serving the community for many years. Not only can you shop and eat, but you can also gather information or enjoy entertainment. The new location boasts outdoor seating, allowing visitors to savor their meals in the sunshine. As of June 2023, more stalls will be opening, but for now, community members and visitors have various options.
Amidst its rich history and exciting changes, Lexington Market remains not just a marketplace but a living, breathing testament to Baltimore's past, present, and the dynamic spirit that continues to shape its future.
